Personal Thoughts on Oscar Nominations 2019

The Academy recently released the list of Oscar nominations for the 91st ceremony that will be held on Sunday February 24th. Heavy favorites grabbed a heap of nominations such as A Star is Born, Roma, and The Favourite. There was certainly a few "snubs" and didn't get as much recognition from the Acadedmy and there were also some nominations that took people by surprise. The nominatons made some people thrilled and others not so much.

There were definitely some films and stars that I believe got "snubbed" and no love from the Academy. For example, for the Best Documentary Feature category, Won't You Be My Neighbor? did not even receive a nomination. In my opinion, this was the best documentary of 2018. It portrays the heart and kindness of Fred Rogers and takes viewers on a journey throughout his life. This is shown through clips from old Mister Rogers' Neighborhood episodes as well as through the interviews from the people that meant the most to him. It was intiricate and provoked emotion and feeling to everyone who watched it. To see this documentary be swept under the rug from the Acadedmy makes me upset. Another "snub" in my opinion was seeing Bradley Cooper not be nominated for Best Director for the film A Star is Born. A Star is Born is Cooper's directorial debut and was a standout from 2018. It has Cooper portraying a singer who is battilng addiction and meets a struggling artist and how they meet and are there for each other through the ups and downs of the industry. This did not feel like a directorial debut from the choice of shots or choice of angle in a particular scene. It seemed that he knew what he was doing and I hope to see him direct more films in the future because he has potential to become a great director. It is a shame that the Academy didn't recognize that talent. Another "snub" to me was not a lot of love for the film A Quiet Place. A Quiet Place was a horror film that came out in early part of 2018 and was directed by John Krasinski. It had an original concept about a post apocalyptic world where monsters are hunting down people who make sound. This was Krasinski's directorial debut and it did not come across that way with all the details that Krasinski was able to put in this film. The only nomination it got was for Best Sound Editing and I wish Krasinski got a nomination for Best Original Screenplay if anything else and it is sad that the Academy showed no love for this film. The last "snub" that I can think of is Emily Blunt not receiving an Oscar nomination for any of the performances that she gave this year. Her performance in A Quiet Place was exceptional and the bathtub scene is one to watch and if you have seen the film, you know exactly what I mean. Her performance in Mary Poppins Returns was my favorite of 2018 and it is a shame she wasn't recognized for her performances for both of those films.

There were also some surprises that came about this year with the nominations. The first surprises being that Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira received Oscar nominations for their performances in the film Roma. When I saw the film, I was secretly rooting for these two women to receive a nomination for their outstanding performances and I am so beyond thrilled that they received one. Also to mention, Roma was the first film Yalitza was ever in and that makes it that much greater. The love Roma got from the Academy as a whole was a good surprise for me from not only picking up nominations for Director, Foreign Language, and others but also for Best Picture. Another surprise for me was seeing Black Panther getting nominated for Best Picture. Black Panther blew up in 2018 and it deserves all the accolades and all the buzz it has gotten and continues to receive. The last surprise I can think of is that Melissa McCarthy received an Oscar nomination for the film Can You Forgive Me? because I have never heard of that film before. I have heard that McCarthy gives an amazing performance and is different from anything she has ever done before. These were the nominations that surprised me the most.

Overall, I was happy with the Oscar nominations that were released. Looking through the nominations, I have not seen some of the films such as The Favourite, Green Book, Vice, and I'm sure there are more so I feel that I can't be excited for their nominations not knowing what these films are even about. I was happy to see Roma get so much love from the Academy. I thought that because it was a film that was released through Netflix, it would not be taken seriously as a film produced by Hollywood. The Academy had some diversity through their nominations from Spike Lee and Alfonso Cuaron being nominated for Best Director, to having Regina King and Marina De Tavira being nominated for Best Supporting Actress and I am sure there was more diversity that I didn't mention. It should be an interesting show since they do not have a host right now and will most likely not have one. I feel that not having a host can be a good thing for it might speed up the program and maybe move a little faster. At the other hand, having a host keeps the show running smoothly and can provide many laughs. It shall be interesting to see what happens leading up to the Oscars and hopefully, everything will go according to plan.
